Over the last few years I have been learning the idea of stepping out in faith.

The concept of stepping out in faith is easy to say and in all honesty much harder to put into practice. It’s not something anyone does perfectly besides Jesus.

To step out in faith requires trust in the Lord that he is good and is guiding you into good things and that even though what he’s guiding you into seems hard, or not wise by human standards that it is for the better.

Often times when you “step out in faith” you are doing something uncomfortable or hard.

Maybe you feel as God is calling you into going overseas but you don’t want to live in another country far from your family.

Maybe you feel God is calling you to take a position as a leader that requires more work and doing things you don’t exactly have in mind as “fun”.

Or commonly you could feel called to take part in something that you don’t feel like you have the capability or abilities to do.

With this last one especially comes the often used quote, “God doesn’t call the qualified but qualifies the called”.

Honestly I love this quote. I have seen it and done it.

But to put a new perspective on this there has been something I have had to learn recently.

I want you to know that God does qualify the called, but that doesn’t mean that you don’t have to learn a few things before stepping out sometimes.

What I don’t want christians to think is that because God qualifies us that we can run full force into everything with top speed and forget about the training and seasons of equipping.

While I would go as far as to say that christians who run full speed into what they see God has for them have are definitely on the right track, I think we often forget to slow down and realize there is a time of equipping.

I’ll give you an example real quick.

After high school I decided to run off and do the world race gap year. That was a crazy step of faith for me and an amazing opportunity for me to grow my faith. Afterwards I alumni team led for gap year and then did CGA, the discipleship school for alumni.

During CGA, our lead instructor Ben Able sat down with me.

He told me that I needed to be ok with slowing down. He told me that I needed to be ok with taking the time to grow and mature before running full force into what was next.

As I ran from one thing to the the next I began to mix what I wanted to do out of pride with what I needed to do out of faith and obedience.

Maybe you are doing what I did and are running from one thing to the next more out of pride than obedience.

Maybe you are not getting the full extent out of each season you step into because you ran into it too quick because of your pride.

Maybe when you asked the Lord about what was next you forgot to ask the question of when.

It takes humility to say that you need to prepare for a season, or take a break, or simply mature a little bit before running off into a season that you feel the Lord is calling you into.

I want you to know that none of this is to say that the Lord is not calling you into whatever it is you feel he is calling you into. You just might want to ask “when” before running full force.
